Interview Series: Makeup Artist Justine Sweetman

New years bring new projects. This year, I’m happy to announce a new interview series. I’m so excited to be starting off the series with my friend and vegan makeup artist, Justine Sweetman!

1. Tell us about yourself? What do you do?
I’m a makeup artist specializing in natural and vegan beauty. I work primarily in New York City.

2. Did you have a specific “aha” moment that led you to a vegan lifestyle?
I became vegetarian in middle school upon seeing footage of factory farming on late night TV. I made the switch to veganism three years ago after learning more about whole food nutrition and how to properly cook for myself on a shoestring budget. Eat To Live is a great resource.

3. What advice would you give your teenage self, if you could talk to her today?
Listen to Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Everybody’s Free to Wear Sunscreen’ and take it to heart. Especially the line, “Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they’ve faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you’ll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked.” Also, don’t wear so much makeup.

4. What makes you feel beautiful?
Beauty rituals are wonderful, especially getting a good night’s rest. They’re a way of saying to myself, “I love you and you’re worth spending time on”.

5. Have any extra tips or tricks? Any favorite cruelty-free fashion or beauty products you’d like to share?
Treat makeup like an accessory. You’re glorious without it, but it’s nice to add some eyeliner or lipstick to complete an outfit like you would a piece of jewelry. A few of my favorite beauty brands are Meow Meow Tweet, Gressa Skin, and Josh Rosebrook.

Love Justine’s answers? I sure did!

Every person I interview will have a different spin on beauty, just as we all should. These interviews are not about subscribing to one specific viewpoint, but celebrating a cruelty-free lifestyle that boosts self-esteem! Love makeup? Hate makeup? Doesn’t matter. What does matter is that you love you!

I hope with this interview and the ones to come that the interviewees inspire you to feel beautiful. After all, that’s what BE Beauty is all about.
